A Personal Mission: Giving the Unseen Workforce Their Due
My roots lie in the world of blue-collar labor. My grandfather ("Poppy") started a custom stair-building company in San Francisco, which my father eventually took over and still today. My older brother operates his own stair business, while my younger brother is a coordinator in the local plumber and pipefitters union hall. Needless to say, our summers were spent on job sites while friends were trying out jobs in tech.
When I ventured into the tech industry, I was struck by the lack of products and investments, catered to people like my family - the deskless and blue-collar workers. It was as if the tech world had shrugged and declared, "Those folks can deal with it," or worse yet, considered their challenges "less important." There was plenty of discussion of "personas," but they never seemed to resonate with the working realities of the folks I knew and spent time with.
As the American workforce undergoes transformative shifts due to AI, remote work, and the gig economy, it's clear that traditional systems are failing to keep pace. They simply struggle to cater to the dynamism of today's work landscape. Most solutions I've come across seem to overlook the needs of workers, often limiting their potential to grow, earn more, and improve their quality of life.
